Description

The barred owl (Strix varia) is a large typical owl native to North America. Best known as the hoot owl for its distinctive call, it goes by many other names, including eight hooter, rain owl, wood owl, and striped owl. This beautiful owl, with soulful brown eyes and brown-and-white-striped plumage, can pass completely unnoticed as it flies noiselessly through the dense canopy or snoozes on a tree limb. Originally a bird of the east, during the twentieth century it spread through the Pacific Northwest and southward into California. The most significant predator of barred owls is the great horned owl. This image was captured in Licking County, Ohio, USA.
