I noticed this Blue Dasher dragonfly perched on a reed at the edge of a pond as I was looking for water birds one summer day. It was perched high and seemed to be posing as I stopped to snap a few shots.

The Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is a dragonfly of the skimmer family and grows up to 25-43 mm long. Juvenile males will show female coloration before they turn blue. Females are paired with yellow stripes on the dorsal side of the first 8 abdominal segments. Females are also reported to turn blue, but at a slower rate than the males. Males and females of the blue dasher dragonflies are very different; males are more conspicuous where the females are more elusive. They are found by ponds, lakes, marshes, and bogs. The Blue Dashers are mostly a summer species and primarily eat tiny flying insects; they will eat just about anything, but their favorite meals are mosquito larvae.
