Description
This beautiful Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) was sitting in a large tree in my front yard. The tree had been full of winter song birds just moments before, but they suddenly disappeared when the hawk arrived! I was happy he stayed long enough for me to snap a few shots. He turned around and looked right at me with this icy stare when I snapped this one. Photo captured in central Ohio, USA.
Among the bird world's most skillful fliers, Cooper's Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. You're most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. A common attack maneuver is to fly fast and low to the ground, then up and over an obstruction to surprise prey on the other side. Wooded habitats from deep forests to leafy subdivisions and backyards.
As in many birds of prey, the male is smaller than the female. The birds found east of the Mississippi River tend to be larger on average than the birds found to the west. Other common names for the Cooper's hawk include: big blue darter, chicken hawk, flying cross, hen hawk, quail hawk, striker, and swift hawk.
