Description
This female mallard duck (anas platyrhynchos) is one of a pair that stops by frequently in my yard. We have bird feeders in the winter, and sometimes the seed lingers into late spring or even summer. This beautiful female had finished eating, and was sitting in the shade of a large tree in our front lawn. There was evening sun on both sides of her, but the shade provided a lovely backdrop for me to photograph her. I was able to get quite close, and she was cautious, but more curious than her mate. She sat quite still and allowed me to capture this image of her as her mate waddled off to the neighbor's yard. Thank you, Mrs. Mallard; you're quite a beauty!
The black and white version, and a digitally painted version of this image are also available in my gallery.
