Description

Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia butterfly, Julia heliconian, the flame, or flambeau, is a species of brush-footed butterfly.

This Julia longwing butterfly is perched upon a leaf, and appears to be showing off the beauty of its carmel brown wings. I wanted to bring the eye directly to the grace and beautiful details of this delicate creature, so chose to present this image in black and white. I also love the way the light illuminates the image. It is very different from the full color version, which is also available in my gallery. This image was taken at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, OH.
