Description
Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia butterfly, Julia heliconian, the flame, or flambeau, is a species of brush-footed butterfly.
This Julia longwing butterfly is perched upon a leaf, and appears to be showing off the beauty of its carmel brown wings. I wanted to bring the eye directly to the grace and beautiful details of this delicate creature, so chose to leave the dark red background (which was part of a blown glass display), true to color in order to contrast the butterfly. I also love the way the light illuminates the image. I captured this photo image at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, OH.
This image is very different from the black and white version, which is also available in my gallery.
