Description

A large White-tailed Deer buck is visiting the edge of my neighbor's garden in autumn. The rutting season has brought movement from the males to places they don't normally visit. I captured this photo early one morning as several bucks, ranging in age from a yearling, up to this large, mature buck, were sparring and challenging one another in friendly competition. This buck kept hidden most of the morning, coming out in the open occasionally to graze, and once to chase off a competitor. It was fascinating to watch how they interacted with each other. The younger males in the group were most likely sons of this buck.

The white-tailed deer is a species belonging to the Cervidae family, the Capreolinae subfamily, and the genus Odocoileus. It is tan or brown in the summer and grayish brown in winter. It has white on its throat, around its eyes and nose, on its stomach and on the underside of its tail. The male has antlers. Males weigh between 150 and 300 pounds and females weigh between 90 and 200 pounds.
