Description
This tropical milkweed plant was in my garden (central Ohio, USA), and lovingly supported Monarch butterfly eggs, caterpillars, and finally, the beautiful Monarch butterflies. This is the final stage of the plant, but I think it is equally as beautiful as the colorful blooms in summer. I chose black and white for this image to bring out the beauty, lines and texture of the pod. The color version of this image is also available in my gallery.
Asclepias curassavica, commonly known as tropical milkweed, is a flowering plant species of the milkweed genus, Asclepias. It is native to the American tropics and has a pantropical distribution as an introduced species. The milkweed plant is critical for the survival of Monarch butterflies as it is the only plant on which they lay their eggs.
