Description
I was fascinated with this beautiful red Heliconia Bihai (red palulu) plant, and it's tropical beauty. It is native to northern South America, and the West Indies, but I found this one blooming in the Franklin Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio.
The Heliconia is used as an ornamental plant in hot regions with a humid climate, and is typically pollinated by bats and hummingbirds. This upward facing flower, which acts as a cup, is a natural source of rain water for birds and insects. Other names by which the plant is commonly known include balisier and macawflower.
