A large White-tailed Deer buck is visiting the edge of my neighbor's garden in autumn. The rutting season has brought movement from the males to places they don't normally visit. I captured this photo early one morning as several bucks, ranging in age from a yearling, up to a large, 10 point mature buck, were sparring and challenging one another in friendly competition. This buck was competing with a younger button buck much of the morning. The younger button buck may have been an offspring of this buck. It was fascinating to watch how they interacted with each other.
The white-tailed deer is a species belonging to the Cervidae family, the Capreolinae subfamily, and the genus Odocoileus. It is tan or brown in the summer and grayish brown in winter. It has white on its throat, around its eyes and nose, on its stomach and on the underside of its tail. Males weigh between 150 and 300 pounds and females weigh between 90 and 200 pounds.
