Description
The view looking out the left corner of the Rock house in the Pickett State Forest, in northern Tennessee. I was amazed at the huge size of this, and other rock formations in this area. This was an easy trail to follow, and well worth the time and effort to see these magnificent formations. This photo was captured in early autumn, as the leaves were just starting to turn, yet still lush with the green remains of summer.
Indian Rockhouse Trail is a 0.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Pall Mall, Tennessee that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking and is accessible year-round.
Located on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee and Kentucky, the Big South Fork national park contains 1,338 documented archaeological sites, more than in any other national park in the Southeast. The Plateau served primarily as a seasonal hunting ground for the Cherokee and Shawnee Indians, who never established permanent village sites. Deep gorges carved by eons of erosion have created impressive cliffs and arches throughout the area and they used, instead, caves and rockhouses cut by the streams and rivers along the walls of the steep canyons as their temporary quarters.
During the winter, Cherokee men traveled to Tennessee and Kentucky where they hunted wild boar, deer, wild turkey and forest animals, for the most part. They were also renowned fishermen. Evidence of their occupation is everywhere. A trained eye can discern the remains of spear and arrow points and pieces of flint used to scrape animal hides. Archaeologists have found depressions worn into rock in the vicinity of these rockhouses, used as a primitive bowl for grinding. Later, the longhunters of the Daniel Boone era used some of the rockhouses for shelter before they built cabins as hunting bases.
