Description
This Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is feasting on a pink swamp milkweed bloom as it makes a stop in my garden during its southern migration journey. It takes off in flight just as I snap, capturing a beautiful lift off from the milkweed blooms. It was a bright sunny day, and dark evergreen trees in the background produced the contrasting black background.
The eastern North American Monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north.
This image was captured in central Ohio. Perfect to hang on your home or office wall, or to adorn many products available as a thoughtful gift for someone special!
